Scientific support to new instrumentation

ELT Science

The Massive Star research group at the CAB participates in the science teams of two instruments that are being developed for the European Extremely Large Telescope.

MOSAIC

ELT/MOSAIC is the multi-object spectrograph for the ELT. MOSAIC will allow spectroscopic observations of around 200 objects simultaneously using accurately positioned fibre-optic cables. The unique design of this instrument allows observations at both optical and near-IR wavelengths at a range of spectral resolving powers. The scientific goals focus on making an inventory of matter in the Universe. Our groups scientific interest focus on the massive star populations in the Local Universe by systematically mapping the chemical content of the young populations of Local Universe galaxies.

MOSAIC (Multi-Object Spectrograph) is a versatile multi-object spectrograph that will use the widest possible field-of-view provided by the ELT (Extremely Large Telescope). It will have three operating modes that cover observations in visible and infrared light for more than a hundred sources simultaneously.
