Some fifteen years ago, Damián H. Zanette and myself started exploring certain cultural patterns, as the abundance of different surnames or the repetition of ancestors in biparental genealogical trees. We have had much fun combining these interests with our professional knowledge. More than ten papers have resulted from our investigations, and several years ago we decided it was time to write a popular science account on the subject. Today, the book is out thanks to a Prize granted by Universitat de València and the town of Alzira.
In its first edition, the book has been translated to Catalan. Within a few months, the Spanish edition should appear. We hope it can be soon translated to English!
“Els nostres pares ens han donat nom i ens han llegat els cognoms que diuen qui som. Una multitud d’avantpassats han encreuat els seus gens per a produir els que cada un de nosaltres tenim. Però si comparem els arbres genealògics de dos individus coetanis, descobrim que, en remuntar-nos a un temps no gens llunyà, resulten idèntics. De fet, l’herència genètica rebuda d’aquells individus que ens han llegat el cognom és ínfima.
Com és d’important el nostre llegat genètic? Fins a quin punt ens condiciona? Gens i genealogies relaciona els nostres trets culturals i biològics amb la intenció de fer-nos comprendre com apareixen algunes regularitats i, alhora, desfer alguns mites sobre la rellevància de l’herència. De ben segur que, partint dels arguments que s’hi exposen, el lector es replantejarà el valor de l’herència genètica i la importància de certs trets culturals que aparentment ens defineixen.”
